Energy Freedom Day Is Coming: Congress Should Let Restrictions on Offshore Oil Production Lapse READ MORE
The Next Step for Congress Even if Congress does not pass a bill that affirmatively opens up these offshore areas, it could accomplish the same end by simply letting the existing restrictions lapse. This Congress has not yet passed its DOI appropriations bill (or any other appropriations bill, for that matter), in large part because Republicans insisted on adding amendments to open up the OCS and the Democratic leadership would not allow a vote on them. The current appropriations—and their restrictions on DOI spending for offshore leasing—are set to expire on September 30. The next day, October 1, could then be Energy Freedom Day.Of course, it will take time for DOI to lease these areas and for the energy companies to develop them, but the process can at least begin. And given the strong public support for expanded domestic drilling, we can not start soon enough. When Congress does finally write its budget legislation, it should not stand in the way of Energy Freedom Day.
Channel 13 from New York has a very good report on an accidental BBQ on a new-car hauler. They not only have a slide show posted but also a video report as well.
The truck driver–Timothy Misuraca, 33, of Blasdell N.Y.–told authorities that he had been traveling south when an outside tire on the rear of the trailer blew out. When he pulled over to inspect the tire, he saw that an inside tire was on fire.

The Carhaul ballots are to be picked up and counted on Aug. 12th. Two of us from our Local will be observers at the ballot count. There are reports of ballots having been received by those who should not be voting, such as retired, resigned, discharged, or even dead. We need the names and locals of each of these types that members have solid first hand information about. Any ideas or suggestions to insure that the members get a fair and honest ballot count would be greatly appreciated.
Most members I have spoke with are fully aware of what is at stake, and are voting “NO”. Times may be difficult for several reasons, but giving in or giving up all the proposals contained in the package our “Leaders” have tried to sell to us, won’t make times any better for rank and file members! How many solid proposals submitted by the members to our “Leaders” have been advanced into proposed language changes?
Effective Leaders find a way, others find excuses. That is all we have heard since the first membership survey went out, and in every Carhaul Update since……excuses….. excuses! While our Leaders are selling us a poor bag of goods, the employers are already planning their next move, should this can of worms is voted down. We need to be sure the members “NO” is heard loud and clear. Any changes made to our NMATA contract must be substantive and of “mutual” benefit. Many needed changes are LONG overdue such as, legal trip routing for every load. Corrective adjustments made when company is notified that a given route is shorted due to truck or weight restrictions. Simplify much of the ambiguous or confusing language. An agreed dictionary for the terminology and terms. Require that ALL panel and arbitration cases and decisions contain clear details as to why and how the matter was presented, argued and decided, then posting the results on line with a content “search” feature. Since this won’t be done by our leaders, it must get done by the members…..get involved, get informed and get organized and focused and get busy! I can honestly say that no organization can help do this better than TDU! Your voice, your vote, your future! PS…. vote “NO”!
July 25, 2008: Carhaulers across the USA are speaking out against the concessionary national contract that is being voted on right now.
Many are angry about the outright lies being told on the Teamster website about members’ sentiments.
You can read a letter from a concerned steward in Kansas City Local 41, who calls on president Hoffa to pull the plug on the lies and on those who abuse members. Click here to read the letter.
The International Union has even screwed up the ballot mailing, although most locals provided them with a clean list of carhaulers entitled to vote. The deadline for ballots has been extended to August 12.
If you need a duplicate ballot, contact your local union as soon as possible, and definitely before August 1. Encourage everyone to get a ballot and vote. Organize a big No vote at your terminal.
That high-pitched wail of grinding gears you hear coming from the auto industry these days? It’s the sound of carmakers downshifting madly as they swerve into the third quarter. So how low will second-half production go? Anal… [SUB]
Toyota Motor Corp. on Monday cut its 2008 group-wide global sales forecast by 350,000 units to 9.5 million vehicles due to a pronounced downturn in the U.S. market, in a rare setback for the world’s biggest automaker. The weaker sales outlook also means global production at the parent company would fall 1 percent from 2007 to 8.43 million vehicles, marking the first decline in seven years. Ford executives knew they needed more small cars. The solution: A makeover of the Michigan Truck plant. The move is concrete evidence of the intense effort Ford executives are mounting to deal with rising gasoline prices. The result: Ford Motor is doubling down on CEO Alan Mulally’s small-car bet. The new Ford is going to look a lot different from the Ford he took over in 2006. [SUB] 12:01 am U.S. ET | July 28
By 2011, Chevrolet will get a version of one of the three minicar concepts that General Motors unveiled at the 2007 New York auto show, company executives say. The vehicle, expected to replace the Aveo, will be expanded to the size of a subcompact.[SUB] 12:01 am U.S. ET | July 28
The nation’s 82 Mini franchises are out of cars, and dealers can do little more than take orders and deliver preordered units for the rest of the year. As fuel prices have risen, demand for the Mini Cooper has outstripped supply. [SUB] 12:01 am U.S. ET | July 28
It has come to our attention that the list used in the current Carhaul Agreement ratification vote
was incomplete and that, as a result, a number of members employed by several companies did not
receive ballots. Ballots are now being mailed to them. Accordingly, so that those affected members
are afforded the opportunity to exercise their vote, the ratification period for all members has been
extended to Tuesday, August 12, 2008. This extension applies to all Carhaul members, including
those who have already received ballots and were not affected by the above-described issue. All
ballots, including those that have already been mailed in to the post office, will remain secure at the
post office and will not be collected until the close of the balloting period. Ballots must be received
at the Lanham, Maryland Post Office no later than 10 a.m. Eastern Time, August 12, 2008. The
ballot count will commence that day.
We are also extending duplicate-ballot requests through noon Eastern Time, Friday, August 1, 2008.

One of the biggest locals in our industry has about 40 members that have not yet received ballots in the mail. The members have contacted there local and are trying to get replacements. The IBT is giving them the run around, and this is concerning. What game is the IBT playing with our members? I will have more information on this matter later today. This seems fishy in my book, and can you imagine how many other members, have the same problem? How do we get a fair vote?
