Merrill says GM bankruptcy possiblePosted by: Chainsdraging in Auto Manufactures, General Motors
Wednesday July 2, 12:42 pm ET DETROIT (Reuters) - General Motors Corp (NYSE:GM - News) will need to raise as much as $15 billion in cash to shore up liquidity and bankruptcy is “not impossible” if the U.S. auto market continues to slump, Merrill Lynch said. Other analysts have suggested GM, whose shares fell to a new 54-year low on Wednesday, needs to raise funds to ride out the downturn in the U.S. auto market through 2009.
But Merrill’s estimate of GM’s financing needs is the highest yet. It also carried the most stark warning of the bankruptcy risk for the largest U.S. automaker. GM declined to comment directly on the Merrill Lynch report but it believes it has sufficient liquidity for 2008 despite lower volumes and could take more steps to cut costs if sales conditions worsen. “If conditions continue to deteriorate, we would consider other operating measures,” GM spokeswoman Renee Rashid-Merem told Reuters.

Employers Deny Job Rights to PTS TeamstersPosted by: Chainsdraging in Carhaul News, Contract, PTS, TDU, Teamsters, tags: m, topJune 17, 2008: TDU NEWS, READ THE REST UPDATE

In the wake of PTS’s closure, carhaul employers are trying to violate the national contract and deny the right of PTS Teamsters to follow their work. This attack on our contract, our solidarity, and on Teamsters who struck when they were called out by the International Union cannot be tolerated. All these Teamsters ask is that Article 5 of the contract be honored by Jack Cooper, Allied, Cassens and Active Transportation. At the national grievance hearing today, the employers refused to abide by the contract, and deadlocked initial cases, including Kentucky Local 651 vs. Cassens, and Dallas Local 745 vs. Jack Cooper. Those hearings will continue tomorrow, but the initial cases show that a stronger stand will be needed to protect our jobs and seniority rights. TDU - Teamsters for a Democratic Union
July 1, 2008:Tomorrow union officials will meet in Detroit to discuss the details of the national carhaul contract. Carhaulers have been calling and emailing Teamsters for a Democratic Union with their opinions and concerns on the new contract. Here’s what one brother had to say: “In my view, if Article 48 is amended in such a way that we lose……………………. American Axle & Manufacturing Holdings Inc. has paid CEO Richard E. Dauch an $8.5 million cash bonus for his “leadership role” through an acrimonious three-month union strike that ended with a concessionary contract that slashed factory wages. American Axle, whose stock has fallen nearly 55 percent in 2008, disclosed the cash bonus, a 10 percent base pay increase for Dauch and additional stock… [REG] 12:01 am U.S. ET | June 30 Desperate times, desperate measuresStagflation — perhaps the worst-case scenario for automakers and suppliers — is roiling the auto industry. Suppliers of raw materials such as oil, rubber, steel and plastic resins are imposing huge price increases as vehicle sales collapse. Automakers appear helpless to fend off those rising materials costs. And it seems unlikely that they can pass along the increases to consumers... 12:01 am U.S. ET | June 30 The Detroit 3 cash crunch: How bad is it?Can the Detroit 3 hang on? The startling collapse in sales since April means the three automakers are burning through cash reserves at a terrifying rate. Suddenly they have far more urgent deadlines for fixing their businesses. And they are considering a new range of actions that a few months ago were not on the table. 12:01 am U.S. ET | June 30 Major sales declines expected for JuneTuesday, July 1, is shaping up to be one of the darkest days in decades for the U.S. auto industry. Automakers will likely report June sales declines that underscore just how much consumer demand for vehicles — especially for the heavy sort that were once dear to the Detroit 3 — has declined as... 3:45 pm U.S. ET | June 30 You wonder why you will soon be paying 7 dollars a gallon and nobody is buying cars. AS POSTED ON TDU - Teamsters for a Democratic UnionJune 27, 2008: The effects of the struggling economy on the trucking industry have hit JHT Holdings Inc., a holding company specializing in the transportation of heavy- and medium-duty trucks. The Kenosha, WI-based company and its 16 subsidiaries filed Chapter 11 bankruptcy on Tuesday in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware. The filing was voluntary and pre-negotiated with many of its lenders, the company said. Chapter 11 filings allow a company to reorganize financially while seeking relief from creditors. Carhaul: What You Don’t Know May Hurt YouPosted by: Chainsdraging in Carhaul News, Contract, TDU, union, tags: Carhaul, Contract, Fred, PTS, TDU, top, Zuckerman

TDU - Teamsters for a Democratic Union June 27, 2008: The International Union is being even more secretive than usual about what is in the proposed tentative carhaul contract. As reports of concessions leak out, members are ready to demand some answers. We know that it’s a three-year deal, which very likely means that Allied Teamsters would get stuck with an extra year of wage cuts: their concession deal expires in two years, but has no “snap back” clause to automatically bring them back to union scale. A two-year contract would put all carhaulers back on the same page. Click to continue reading “Carhaul: What You Don’t Know May Hurt You”

GM, Ford, Chrysler Credit Ratings May Be Cut by S&P (Update3)Posted by: Chainsdraging in Auto Manufactures, Carhaul News, Chrysler, Ford, General MotorsBy Caroline Salas June 20 (Bloomberg) — General Motors Corp., Ford Motor Co. and Chrysler LLC credit ratings may be lowered by Standard & Poor’s as higher gas prices inflict “financial damage” on the auto industry. S&P placed the carmakers’ credit ratings, already five levels below investment grade, on CreditWatch negative, according to a statement today. New York-based S&P, a unit of McGraw-Hill Cos., said it may also downgrade their financing arms. While the carmakers will be able to pay their debts this year, their cash may shrink to “undesirable levels” by the end of 2009, S&P said.

No. 2 vehicle hauler will go out of businessPosted by: Chainsdraging in Carhaul News, PTS, TeamstersAndrew Grossman DETROIT — The nation’s second-largest vehicle hauler says it will stop all operations and go out of business. Decreasing volume and rising fuel prices had driven Performance Transportation Services Inc. into bankruptcy twice in the past 2½ years. Last week, a Teamsters union strike against the company dealt the final blow.
