Teamsters Weigh Options After PTS Wage Cuts Approved By Court

Union Leaders Urge Company to Return to Talks; Drop Pay Reductions

June 2, 2008

A U.S. bankruptcy court judge has approved Performance Transportation Services, Inc.’s (PTS) request for 15-percent wage cut, and Teamster leaders are weighing all options in order to fight the company’s move.

In a written order filed today, the judge approved the wage cuts effective starting today and running through as late as July 31. About 1,250 Teamsters at PTS are affected by the wage cuts.

“We remain vigorously opposed to PTS’ wage cuts because they undermine the entire Teamster-represented carhaul industry,” said Fred Zuckerman, Teamsters Carhaul Division Director and lead NMATA negotiator. “I will be discussing our options with General President Jim Hoffa and will also be talking to carhaul local union leaders.”

“Our priority is to protect the interests of our PTS members and all our carhaul members and we will do whatever it takes to make that happen,” Zuckerman said. “Nothing is being ruled out at this point and we continue to urge PTS to return to the bargaining table in good faith and to withdraw the wage cuts immediately.”

This past weekend, Teamsters at PTS approved—by a more than 3-1 margin—authorization for the union to strike PTS if necessary.

“Our members have given their overwhelming support to strike and that is an option for us,” Zuckerman said.
